Hypersensitivity to sound is called hyperacusis. This type of sound sensitivity may be expressed in the patient by their hearing becoming ridiculously acute, for example hearing liquid running through pipes in nearby buildings, but sometimes sounds may even become painful, particularly within the ear. Noises may affect the patient’s balance to such a degree that they fall to the ground and injure themselves. This is a variant of the Tullio phenomenon.
